In a bid to ensure that communities in Imo state commit and support the implementation of Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP), Women Aid Collective (WACOL) and Youth Alive Foundation (YAF) have called on stakeholders to continue to discuss the issue until it gains prominence.
Speaking during the community sensitization awareness meeting held last week Wednesday at Grand Amari Hotel and Resort Hall, the Senior Programme Officer, of WACOL Ogechi Ikeh noted that it was not enough to pass the VAPP law, she stressed that the implementation of the law especially in communities was key to ensuring that violence against women and girls stops.
She encouraged participants drawn across the Imo communities, religious groups, media, civil society organizations to begin to increase campaign on implementation of the law.
She posited that there are some draconian traditional practices that need to be dropped for replacement with VAPP components to make sure that some harmful practices are finetuned.
In his remarks, the Chief Imam, Imo State, Barr. Suleman Yusuf Njoku noted that some of the harmful widowhood practices and issue of inheritance for instance are borne out of lack of love for each other, adding that once there’s justice and
fairness, right living, no person will violate a woman or girl child.
