The Anambra State Town Unions Council (ASTUC) Youth Wing has honoured distinguished individuals from 10 communities in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State for their contributions to community development, youth empowerment and the promotion of positive values.

The initiative, spearheaded by the ASTUC Youth President-General, Comrade Ken Okoli, is aimed at celebrating outstanding individuals during their lifetime and inspiring younger generations to emulate their exemplary conduct and commitment to societal development.

Speaking at the event, Okoli said the programme was designed to strengthen the value system among youths and promote responsible citizenship across Anambra State.

He described the state’s value orientation initiative as a framework for guiding the younger generation, noting that the government was pursuing legislative measures, including the proposed Anambra State Core Values and Responsible Citizenship Bill.

According to him, recognising deserving individuals while they are alive would motivate young people to aspire to excellence and make meaningful contributions to their communities.

Okoli emphasised that the initiative went beyond the presentation of awards, explaining that it was intended to identify individuals whose character, integrity and selfless service could serve as enduring examples for future generations.

Speaking on behalf of the awardees, Chief Ifeanyi Okenwa, recognised as the role model for Obosi community, expressed gratitude for the recognition and urged well-meaning individuals to use their resources to support others and advance community development.

He also advised youths to acquire practical skills that would promote self-reliance and help tackle the challenge of unemployment.

Similarly, Mr Chris Obi Okafor, who represented Chief Emeka Nwabueze, the role model for Ogidi community, said true role models were defined not by their financial standing but by their positive impact on the lives of others.

Okafor noted that anyone could become a role model through everyday actions, responsible conduct and a genuine commitment to improving the welfare of those around them.

He added that the awardees were selected in recognition of their exemplary behaviour and positive influence within their respective communities.

Also speaking, Chief Emmanuel Arinzechukwu, the role model for Nkpor community, commended the ASTUC Youth Wing for introducing a programme he described as a catalyst for grassroots development and innovation.

He urged young people to prioritise education, cultivate humility and embrace community service. He also called on the government to provide an enabling environment for youths to develop their talents and realise their full potential.

Other distinguished personalities recognised at the event included Chief Jonas Okafor of Abacha, Chief Arinzechukwu Mezue of Abatete, Chief Ogonna Olisa of Oraukwu and Chief Arinze Obiefuna of Umuoji.

The programme forms part of the ASTUC Youth Wing’s broader efforts to promote responsible citizenship, preserve positive community values and encourage young people to draw inspiration from individuals whose lives exemplify integrity, hard work and selfless service.

The initiative also underscored the importance of celebrating community builders during their lifetime while encouraging others to follow their example.

The event ended with renewed appeals to youths to uphold positive values, acquire relevant skills and contribute actively to the development of their communities and Anambra State.
