Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, Monday, distributed ten mobile clinic vehicles and equipment to the rural communities of the state.
Speaking during the distribution, the governor said it was discovered that most of the deaths at the rural areas were avoidable, reason he decided to provide the mobile clinics, since reports had indicated that it will take up to 18 months to revive the ailing health centres in the state.
He said equipment in the mobile clinics were of international standard and disclosed that the mobile clinics are meant for indigent people in the rural areas who cannot readily access medical attention due to lack of functional public health institutions, while those in the urban areas can access medical attention from various government health institution in Owerri and its outskirts.
He said the clinics are provided with at least two medical doctors and four certified nurses and directed the Interim Management Committee (IMC) chairmen and their members to closely monitor administration of the clinics and ensure that no abuse or mismanagement of any type is allowed.
“I am confident that our nurses, Reverend Sisters and doctors will leave up to our expectation and at the end of the day our joy will be that we can now save our people from deaths that could be occasioned by lack of medication.
“These services for today are free of charge and the drugs are free of charge. The only thing is that it must get to those who need it. I don’t want anybody to commercialize any aspect of this programme or abuse the distribution of drugs.
“Every mobile clinic here is already stocked with drugs worth millions of Naira and we will provide adequate security to ensure that the operators are protected at all times,” the governor concluded.
