To grow, expand and intensify humanitarian service, the Rotary Club of Owerri Newton, has inducted new members. They are Chidi Uka Munachimso Chioma (Fashion Designer), Engr. Echeruo Chidiebere Sylva (Engineer), Uwakwe Geoffrey Azubuike (Staff of World Health Organization).
Performing the induction rituals, Chartered President, Rotary Club of Owerri Newton, Rtn. Cajetan Osuagwu, charged them to always be faithful to the Club, discharge their duties diligently, in accordance to the rules of the Club to add to its growth and success.
Osuagwu who explained that the inductees are lucky to be the first members to be inducted into the Club which he noted started on 23rd of February 2023, described them as sensible, qualified professionals and intelligent people who are often enthusiastically ready to assist humanity, pointing out that Rotary is all about helping humanity, affecting society positively.
“There are quite a lot of people in town who cannot afford to live well. So, we get the little things we have to assist them. Rotary is just asking for 3 things: treasury, time and talent. That is why we are celebrating the inducted members today”, Osuagwu stressed.
The President mentioned that about 2 months ago, the Club carried out a health outreach at Umuoba Uratta community in Owerri North LGA of Imo State where more than 2000 persons got free medical care, as they were treated of hepatitis and other ailment, tested of High Blood Pressure and Malaria, observing that over 10 medical doctors, 3 lab attendants and over 10 nurses helped to administer the medication, saying the feat was successfully done in collaboration with Dozie Umuoba Uratta, making sure that the people were taught on hygiene of hand-washing, environmental cleanliness, empowered 5 people to boost and set up businesses.
He urged government to join hands with Rotary Club of Owerri Newton to assist poor masses, lift and develop communities, asserting that there are many people who are in need of a lot of things, hinting that the Club has built toilets, boreholes in schools and communities.
“Normally, we meet every Tuesday evening from 5: PM to 7: PM. Monday was a special day because it was a World Day for Drug Abuse and we know that drug abuse is one thing that affects every body. Hence we invited the Special Adviser to the Governor on Drug Abuse to do a talk on drug abuse. Our installation of the first President of Rotary Club of Owerri Newton is on 23rd of July 2023. We will unveil a lot of things to do in the next years”, he noted.
In his word, one of the Rotarians, Rtn. Sebastian Okwu, advised the inductees to often maintain their allegiance to the Club, relates cordially with others, to move forward, as Rotary is an organized social organization, adding that what makes one a good Rotarian is what he or she knows about Rotary.
With one of the quests, Dr. Jude Ohale, admonishing the inducted member to live to the expectations of the Club.
However, the inductees, Chidi Uka Munachimso Chioma, Engr. Echeruo Chidiebere Sylva and Uwakwe Geoffrey Azubuike vowed that they would respect the constitution of the Club, as well as contribute to the growth of the Club and the society.
Earlier in her lecture titled “Say No to Drug Abuse” in commemoration of the United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking, Special Adviser to the Governor on Drug Abuse, Hon. Dr. Lina Okereke, said the society will be good and progressive when drug abuse which she said leads to crime and other social vices is reduced minimally.
Okereke harped that the abuse of negative substances like cocaine, heroine, mkpurumiri, feces (dungs), urine, cannabis sativa causes multiple organ failure: kidney, heart, brain disorder including cancer, leading to loss of life, hence she warned school children, youths and elderly persons to desist in order to live healthily, soundly, happily, joyfully, pleasingly and prosperously.
