In Lagos state, APC has secured an overwhelming victory in Saturday’s senatorial bye-election in Lagos East district.
INEC Returning Officer and professor at the University of Lagos, Ademola Oremosun, who announced the final result of the election Sunday morning, said that its candidate, ex-banker Tokubo Abiru, polled 89,204 votes to win the election, beating Babatunde Gbadamosi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who scored 11,257 votes.
The by-election was conducted on Saturday in the five local governments in the district – Epe, Ibeju-Lekki, Kosofe, Somolu and Ikorodu, became vacant following the death of the former occupant, Bayo Oshinowo, earlier this year.
The election witnessed low voter turnout and late arrival of election materials in most of the 71 wards, 1,928 polling units and 188 voting points in the district.
Out of the 1,168,790 registered voters in Lagos East Senatorial District announced by INEC, only 104,921 were accredited with 104,405 votes cast. Of the total votes cast, 102,336 were valid votes while 2,069 were rejected votes.
Also in Kosofe constituency 2 of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Femi Saheed of the APC was declared winner of Saturday’s by-election.
Iyinola Oni of the Department of Geography, University of Lagos, who was INEC Collation Officer for the by-election in Kosofe, declared the result at 5.35a.m on Sunday.
According to him,, the APC candidate polled 12,494 votes to beat his closest rival, Sikiru Alebiosu of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), who got 2,068.
Bauchi
In Bauchi, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Bala Lukshi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the winner of the just-concluded state assembly by-election into Dass constituency of Bauchi state.
Ahmed Mohammed, a professor and the returning officer, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, announced the results in Dass on Sunday.
He said that the APC candidate of polled 12,299 while Lawal Wundi of the PDP scored 11,062 votes.
Zamfara results declared inconclusive
The INEC returning officer of the Bakura state House of Assembly by-election in Zamfara has declared the exercise inconclusive.
Ibrahim Magawata, a professor, said after the collation of the result of the votes cast, the two major contenders, -the APC and PDP – scored 16,464 and 18,645 respectively, giving a difference of 2,181.
Magawata further said the results from 14 polling units were cancelled due to over voting, adding that the results from the 14 polling units affected 11,429 voters which is higher than the margin announced and so declared the election inconclusive.
He also said that some polling units scored zero due to ballot box snatching, violence, assault on INEC officials and burning of election materials by thugs.
Cross River State
Stephen Odey of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has won the Cross River North senatorial bye-election which held on December 5 with a landslide.
The Independent National Electoral Commissioner (INEC) declared the PDP candidate the winner of the election on Sunday.
INEC Returning Officer, Professor Ameh Akor Dennis, said Odey swept to victory in the five local government areas of Cross River State.
He polled a total of 129,207 votes to defeat his opponent of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Joe Aji who got 19,165 votes.
Widow replaces husband in Cross River by-election
Maria Godwin Akwaji, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, in the Obudu State constituency of Cross River State has won the election with a landslide.
Akwaji was declared the winner of the poll by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Returning Officer, Prof. Abel Ezeoha, on Sunday.
He said Akwaji won with a landslide victory of 32, 166 votes beating her closest opponent, Abor Adaje Godwin of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who garnered 3, 546 votes.
Maria is wife to the former occupant of the seat, GodwinAkwaji, who died at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital in June two weeks after he was admitted.
With this development, she now succeeds her husband to represent the people of Obudu constituency in the Cross River State House of Assembly.
