Coalition of civil society groups has appealed to Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State to commence an inquiry into the alleged gang raping of a 16-year old girl, Goodness Pius, in the state.
The coalition is comprised of Civil Rights Realisation and Advancement Network (CRRAN), Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC), Parent-Child Intervention Centre, and Centre for the Victims of Extra-Judicial Killings and Torture (CVEKT AFRICA).
In a petition made available to News Echo in Enugu, yesterday, the human rghts activists stated that they had earlier drawn the attention of the state Commissioner of Police to the incident.
According to them, “the petition on this same subject matter dated 23rd November, 2020, by
Okechukwu Nwanguma, the Executive Director of RULAAC was also sent to the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command”
“It is disheartening that three weeks after the occurrence of this crime, the Enugu State Police
Command has failed to arrest the criminals who perpetrated this heinous crime of gang raping the 16-year old victim.
“This appeal to your office becomes necessary because you are the Chief Security Officer of the state and this dastardly act of these criminals affects all of us as a people; this type of barbaric act should never be tolerated in any civilised society”.
The activists called on the governor to prevail on the relevant authorities to ensure that the matter is investigated properly and that Justice is served.
