A security and veterinary expert based in Umuahia, Abia State, Ambassador Chukwunazom Obi has advised Nigerians to adhere strictly to instructions that will prevent rabies , warning that rabies is not a curable disease but avoidable.
Obi gave this advice in Umuahia Monday during this year’s rabies day commemoration.
World Rabies Day is a United Nations day endorsed by international human and veterinary health organizations such as the World Health Organization to launch awareness campaigns against rabies disease. It takes place every September 28.
The day is also used to celebrate late Mr Louis Pasteur, who developed first efficacious rabies vaccine with his colleagues.
In his message to Nigerians which was made available to journalists in Umuahia, Amb. Obi, the Chief Executive Officer, Trustlink Birds, Animals, Guards and Dogs Institute, a subsidiary of Trustlink Ventures pointed out that the day aims to raise awareness concerning the impact of rabies on humans and animals, provide information and advice on how to prevent the disease in at-risk communities, and support advocacy for increased efforts in rabies control.
He informed that the year’s theme focuses on vaccination and collaboration, revealing that rabies is avoidable but not curable.
Obi said that the institute has been collaborating with government to vaccinate and give adequate treatment to dogs, adding that the institute also trains people on how to manage dogs, cross breed and take adequate care of dogs.
He urged Nigerians to always get prepared before getting a dog to rear and also advised people to always vaccinate their dogs as at when due, to prevent rabies.
