The Catholic Archbishop of Owerri Ecclesiastical Province, Most Rev. Anthony Obinna has accused Nigerian political leaders of abusing and lowering the standard of education, while de-emphasizing its importance.
Obinna made the assertion while delivering a homily during the reception organized in the honour of the deputy governor of Imo State, Prof Placid Njoku, by the management of St. Columba’s College, Amaimo, Ikeduru, his alma mater on Thursday, at the school premises.
The prelate however, stated that at a time when leaders with low or no quality education have occupied the seats of power, he was proud to identify with Njoku, whom he said earned his degrees and positions by dint of hard work and not by malpractice or certificate forgery.
Obinna who reiterated that the journey of a thousand miles begins with one serious step, noted that it was the formation Njoku received at St. Columba’s College that helped him all through his course in life.
He charged the students to stand by the best standard, no matter the price.
In his speech, the deputy governor, Prof. Placid Njoku who gave a testimony of his humble beginning, said he came into the college in the year 1960, and from there, rose to greater heights.
Njoku described his success in life as a great privilege which also came through hard work and humility. He told the students to remain focused and resilient, even in the face of challenges, as they are the only ones that can stop themselves from succeeding.
Highlights of the day were interactive session between the deputy governor and the students, presentation of gift items to the deputy governor, dedication of the science laboratory hall attracted to the school by Senator Samuel Anyanwu and a friendly football match in honour of the deputy governor.
