NNPC, Total donates school building to Abia community

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, (NNPC), Total Upstream Nigeria Limited and partners, on Wednesday donated a model secondary school to Old Umuahia community in Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State.

The event was well attended by stakeholders in the education industry, as well as elders of old Umuahia community in Umuahia South.

According to the donors, the massive structure consists of an administrative block, made up of well laid out, equipped and furnished offices for the principal, vice principal, secretary as well as two other teachers, among others facilities.

The donors further explained that the model secondary school is also equipped with; one 60kva soundproof generator, 15kva solar powered inverter and borehole to serve student’s water needs.
In his address during the ceremony, Abia State commissioner for education, Associate Professor Kanaelechi Nwangwa, reiterated the determination of Okezie Ikpeazu led government towards the provision of quality education in the state, stressing that his ministry would continue to partner with corporate organisations in education sector.

The education commissioner charged the old Umuahia community and Umuahia South L.G.A, to adequately secure the school facilities against vandals.

Earlier, the representatives of Mr Mike Sangster, Managing Director and Chief Executive, Total Upstream companies in Nigeria and Bala Wunti, Group General Manager NNPC said the project was borne out of the need to cover the gaps in health care, quality education,water, women and youth empowerment, in line with the relevant Millennium Development Goals.

Also appreciating the donation, the transition committee chairman of Umuahia South, Chief Ndukwe Adindu and Principal of old Umuahia Community Secondary School (Senior Section), Mrs. Agwu Ugo, remarked that the students will have no excuses for not doing well as they will now study with modern learning equipment and laboratories.
