The newly constituted board of Imo State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (ISPHDA), says it is committed to reducing infant maternal morbidity and mortality rate in Imo State, particularly at the rural communities.

This promise was made by the Executive Secretary of the Agency, Rev Sister Maria- Joannes Uzoma, during the formal handover from the outgoing Executive Secretary to the new one, in Owerri, on Tuesday, October 13.

The new Executive Secretary, who frowned that Imo State has a high rate of infant maternal morbidity and mortality, vowed that the board will ensure that it promotes and develops primary healthcare centres in Imo State, to reduce diseases, deaths among infants and their mothers.

Uzoma hinted that the agency would always reach out to all communities in Imo State to hear from the people about their health challenges in order to tackle them headlong.

In her words, “our primary goal is to reach out to Imo people, particularly those at the rural communities to reduce child maternal morbidity and mortality. Imo State has a high case of infant maternal morbidity and mortality. We will work harmoniously with staff of the agency to achieve the goal”.

Expressing delight on the smooth handover, Chairman of the Board, Dr Joseph Obinwanne Chinemerem, disclosed that the agency, which is saddled with the responsibility to maintain health services in the state, particularly at the rural areas, will equitably distribute health equipment the to healthcare centres at the rural areas, with a view to boosting the primary healthcare system.
