Civil servants in Imo State have vehemently rejected the directive by the Austin Chilakpu-led Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Imo State chapter for them to commence a one week warning strike from Monday December 21st 2020.
The workers wondered why the union’s leadership suddenly woke up from slumber to hurriedly give directives for the strike action.
Some of the workers who spoke to News Echo, under the condition of anonymity, accused Chilakpu of having been romancing with the Hope Uzodimma-led administration since its inception, to the point of turning itself to the governor’s spokesman, justifying most of his actions which were clearly against the workers of Imo State.
Some workers in the office of the deputy governor of Imo State, who analyzed the development, faulted the timing for the strike directive, being that they were expecting their December salary, to enable them take care of their families for the Christmas and New year festivities, arguing that the strike action will jeopardize their chances of getting the salary which they don’t want to contemplate at all.
Some of them even alleged that the so called strike directive may be a ploy by the governor and leadership of NLC to deny them the December salary, which they said is usually paid before the 25th of every December.
A lady in one of the government establishments who identified herself simply as Amarachi, described it as a joke of the century and wondered why the labour leaders in the state should be calling for strike at the exact time when the state government usually gives workers Christmas break, as was obtainable during the reign of former governor Rochas Okorocha.
Some of the workers said that they were looking for the number of the popular radio presenter, Chinonso Uba popularly known as Nonso Nkwa, to inform him of their rejection of the strike directive, so he could make it public.
They vowed to be in office on Monday even if Chilakpu and other members of his executive decide to block the whole place with military men.
