The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has called on all the authorities concerned to put machineries in place to better the standard and quality of living of the girl child in tackling every challenge in life.
Speaking on the commemoration of the 2021 International Day of the Girl child with the theme” Digital Generation, Our Generation, the state chairman of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Barr. Vivian Ottih emphasized that even though today’s girls have already formed part of the digital generation, research has shown that girls make little percentage of graduates in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
Barr Ottih pointed out that all that is needed is little push and empowerment to harness the potentials in the girl child, stressing that girls have equal ability in every field of endeavors.
The NAWOJ boss emphasized on the need for the government to fashion out programs that will help girls own their rights, and support their life plans in the digital world as well as provide safe spaces and support networks.
According to Barr Ottih, she said that girls are fundamental sources of transformational change for gender equality, and that technology is a crucial tool to support their work, activism and leadership hence the theme for this year’s celebration of the International day of the girl child.
She pleaded with the government both at the states and federal levels as well as private sectors to make provisions through the school system for equal access to the Internet and Digital devices for girls to meaningfully access, use, lead and design technology, empathizing that Digital Inclusion and literacy of the girl child will build more inclusive digital societies and put girls and young women at the center of designing and learning solutions for the digital world.
