The federal government of Nigeria has kicked off its special cash-grant programme for indigent women and petty traders in Imo State.

Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajia Amina Farouk, performed the inaugural disbursement of the cash-grant at the Ahiajoku Convention Centre, Owerri, Thursday.

Farouk claimed that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, since its inception in 2015, has paid more attention to alleviating the plight of the poor and vulnerable persons in the country.

She said the federal government has already enrolled 11,697 poor and vulnerable households from benefiting 10 local government areas in Imo State, under the programme which she said gulped over N474 million.

The minister stated that the programme is part of government’s effort towards lifting 100 million Nigerians out of poverty within 10 years.

Among the 20 beneficiaries of the inaugural disbursement are; Apollonia Omeokwe, Susana Osuji from Okigwe LGA and Osuji Centinary from Isiala Mbano LGA. They expressed gratitude for the gesture and promised to put the money to beneficial ventures.
