A retired Director of Operations, Department of Security Service (DSS), Mr Emmanuel Nkemdirim has outlined the strategies for a reformed Police force in Nigeria.
Nkemdirim listed the points in Umuahia on Friday, while reacting to the ongoing clashes between youths and men of the Police force in most parts of the country.
According to him, the reforms in the force should begin from the recruitment/enrolment stage to be followed with regular training , evaluation and close monitoring of the conducts of the officers .
He further canvassed good welfare and motivational packages for the officers to encourage them in their duties. Other panacea according to him included practical adoption of Police model of some developed countries and investment in intelligent gathering, coupled with fishing out of corrupt elements from force.
The security expert, who lamented the current destructions of Police stations in parts of the country, said that a lot needed to be done to build up civilian/Police relationship which he said, had dwindled .
The DSS ex-director however, cautioned against the destructions of public properties in parts of the country, especially in Abia State, noting that the nation was witnessing a challenging period in her 60 years of existence.
