Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi state has described the All Progressives Congress (APC), ward congress in Ebonyi State as peaceful with a massive turnout.
Umahi made this known while speaking to journalists shortly after the Congress exercise.
The Governor further noted that the consensus arrangement was being demonstrated in the field through massive mobilization and voting. The Governor also clarified that the caretaker arrangement by APC is legitimate as against some insinuations that it is illegal.
He said: “When that opinion was expressed, I had to go through the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria and the constitution of the party.” “A section of the party constitution empowers the National Executive Committee to set up a caretaker committee and this caretaker committee is to do the job of any of the organs of the party where there are vacancy/vacancies.”
However, our correspondent report that though the exercise was largely peaceful in most parts of the state but gunmen invaded Ugwuachara Central School, Ebonyi Local Government Area, shooting sporadically. Many persons were said to have sustained injuries from the gunshot while others took to their heels.
Unconfirmed reports said two persons were gunned down at Ugwuachara as unknown gunmen engaged Ebubeagu in shootout during the APC ward congress. A woman on a bike was knocked down with her leg crushed during a chase of the gunmen by the security outfit. She has been rushed to FETHA
When contacted the police spokesperson, Loveth Odah, did not respond to requests for reaction.
The Commissioner for Internal Security, Stanley Okoro Emegha, said he was not aware of the shooting. He said the congress was largely peaceful and successful in most parts of the state.
