The Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON) has volunteered to partner with the Imo State Government towards improving government revenue and prevention of building collapses in the state.

Leadership of the council made their decision known during a courtesy visit they paid to Imo State Conmissioner for works, Ralph Nwosu in his office at the state secretariat, Portharcourt Road, Owerri on Tuesday.

According Engr Christian Ezeh who led the group, “in order to give effect to the said partnership, we request the commissioner’s approval in the following areas

“Inclusion of a registered builders as a member of the building contractors registration board in the ministry of works.

“Inclusion of letter of recommendation from registered builders as one of the requirements for registration of building contractors in the ministry of works”.

Responding, the works commissioner reminded them that it used to be ministry of works, housing and transport, but currently just ministry of works, with the core mandate of road construction.

“Our sister (baby) ministry, the ministry of housing is where you are mainly concerned. Our core mandate now does not encompass what you are doing.

“Meanwhile what you are doing is in order. I wish you can bring in the private sector. The need for competence cannot be overemphasized. Safety should not be compromised for any reason”.

He promised to help relay their request to the appropriate body that will adjust what they presented and fix their recommendations, promising their recommendations will be subjected to departmental scrutiny for the needful to be done.

“I want to assure you that as a ministry, we are going to work with you. Any time we require anything from your council, we will call on you and if you find anything that we are doing that is not in line with professional requirements, please don’t hesitate to point it out.”
