Committee on Imo City Transport Biometric Data Capturing and Painting, has arrested over 4 commercial drivers for defaulting in meeting government directives on capturing and painting of their vehicles.
Parading the defaulters at the office of Imo City Transport, on Monday, Elder Anaelechi Ukawune, Committee Chairman, Imo City Transport Security Biometric Data Capturing and Painting, noted that the committee had set up a monitoring team to check activities of commercial bus drivers in the state.
The Chairman stated that it was not going to be business as usual as the committee is fully committed to protecting interest of government to ensure that Imo is crime free, saying the defaulters would be handed over to law enforcement agents to face the law, warning commercial bus drivers plying within Owerri who hide under Students’ Franchise to make themselves available and comply with government directives to generate revenue for the state or ply only in their school environment.
The Chairman stressed that the reason for commercial bus drivers data capturing and painting was for security of residents, advising citizens to be vigilant and on the lookout for driver’s picture, number plate and Imo City Transport Committee number on every commercial bus before entering it for their own safety.
He promised to make the capturing exercise easy for commercial bus drivers especially those who complain of lack of money for the exercise, “we try to assist those who cannot really pay the complete money at once by accepting from them any amount or allow them pay in installments. I cannot be here and commercial bus drivers suffer. I’m here to help them do what is right if they agree with us”.
Adding his voice, the Imo City Transport Head of Operations, Comr. Emmanuel Oluchukwu, who led the monitoring team, hinted that he was very surprised to discover on their first move good number of commercial vehicles with fake painting and numbers plying the city of Owerri hence their arrest.
He said through the drivers biometric data and capturing, investigation on a particular vehicle and the driver can be very easy, saying stolen vehicles can be easily retrieved through this measure. “This process of Imo City Tranport Biometric Data Capturing and Painting Commission is to check crimes and activities of hoodlums in the state”.
