Following recent chain of attacks on individuals and security personnel in Anambra State, the State Association of Town Unions (ASATU) has urged the state government to consider upgrading operational status of Anambra vigilante services with provision of logistics to complement their efforts tofor more effective and efficient security services delivery in the State.
In a Press statement made available to News Echo in Awka over the weekend, the association bemoaned what it called unwarranted, vicious and calculated attack on the corporate existence of Anambra state, describing it as unacceptable and urged government and security agencies to take more proactive measures in order to contain the terror being unleashed by gunmen.
The statement by the National President of ASATU, Barrister Titus Akpudo recalled the recent kidnap and murder of the President-General of Omor community in Ayamelum local government area, Barrister Francis Onwuachi, as well as attack on frontline Governorship aspirant in Anambra state and former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, leading to the death of three Policemen and abduction (released) of a serving Commissioner.
While noting that South Easterners, especially Anambra citizens, are not known for wanton bloodshed, owing to value attached to human lives, adding That Anambra, under the Willie Obiano administration, has been adjudged a peaceful State in terms of security, which should not be allowed to degenerate into a state of lawlessness.
While sympathizing with families of the gallant officers who paid the ultimate price and heads of security agencies in the state on the loss of their men in the attacks, ASATU applauded the Anambra state government and security agencies for standing up to tackle the rising cases of insecurity in the State.
