Abia State government has imposed a 24-h hour curfew on Umuahia and Aba in reaction to a growing security situation in the state.
The Government in a statement signed by Chief John Okiyi Kalu said the measure was aimed at arresting the invasion of the state by group of cultists and other criminals from other states. The government noted that a group of hoodlums numbering over 30, on Monday night at Asa Road , Aba killed a policeman during an attack on the police patrol team and carting away their arms.
The state government also placed a five million naira bounty on any one with information that would lead to the arrest of the killers of the policeman while instructing the security agents to recover the stolen arms. Meanwhile as at the time of filing this report, a heavy clash was going on at Central Police Station, Umuahia between anti riot Policemen of Abia State Police Command and crowd of protesters numbering over 1,000. Heavy gunshots and teargas could be heard even from the NUJ press Centre which is a stone throw from the press centre.
Also, a Police building has reportedly been burnt down in Aba , Tuesday evening. Umuahia city , Tuesday evening was thrown into a war situation as people ran home in fear, trying to escape stray bullets and also trying to beat the 6:pm deadline
