The Abia State Primary Healthcare Development Agency has been named among the best performing healthcare providing agencies in the country, utilizing Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCP).

This rating was contained in a recent document from the headquarters of National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA), Abuja, which listed Abia among six states of the federation which are utilising funds allocated to them for the provision of basic healthcare in their states.

The records showed that out of 36 states of the federation, only Abia, Osun, Niger, Anambra , Delta, Ebonyi and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have well utilised the funds given to them by the federal government to tackle primary healthcare challenges in their states.

The data further revealed that a total sum of N13.2 billion naira was released to the 36 States and FCT for provision of adequate funding, staffing, provision of drugs and other equipment, but unfortunately, most of the states have collected their own money without abusing it, thereby negating the purpose of the federal government towards a healthy nation.

Abia State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, headed by Dr Chinagozi Adindu has been in the forefront of war against child mortality, through sustained immunisation exercises in urban and rural areas of the state.

He disclosed that his office has also recently, embarked on aggressive immunisation exercises in rural areas, especially the hinterlands which are hard to assess, in the effort to tackle polio, measles and other viral diseases in babies and mothers.

In another development, the Director of National Orientation Agency in Abia State, Dr Ngozi Okechukwu has described her office, NOA as a perfect partner with the Abia State Primary Healthcare Development Agency in the campaigns against mother and infant mortality, stressing that notable achievements have resulted from the synergy.
