The State Chairperson, National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, Mrs. Edith Onwuka has called for more recruitment of qualified nurses and improving working conditions of the staff for effective service delivery in the State.
Onwuka stated this in an interview during the 21 International Nurses Day is Nurse, “A Voice to lead a vision for future healthcare”. Onwuka, who frowned at the activities of untrained Nurses as one of the challenges to the profession, explained that a Committee has been set up to ensure that only approved centres train Nurses.
She commended the Obiano administration and State Ministry of Health and Primary Healthcare Development Agency for involving the association in the ongoing recruitment of Nurses in the State.
Deputy Director in the State Ministry of Health, Mrs. Stella Ekweozor who described Nurses as frontline healthcare workers, said ongoing recruitment of qualified Nurses is a way of improving the general wellbeing in nursing practices.
Recall that International Nurses Day is celebrated on May 12 every year to mark the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth, a British nurse, statistician and social reformer whose efforts to formalize nursing education led her to establish the first scientifically based nursing school, the Nightingale School of Nursing, at Saint Thomas’ Hospital in London, opened 1860.
