Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State, has cautioned youths in the state to desist from the abuse of illicit drugs, saying drug abuse poses enormous danger to biological, psychological, social and economic life.

Obiano, who gave the caution at the weekend, through the State commissioner for Youth Empowerment and Creative Economy, Professor Theresa Obiekezie, during a one-day sensitization and awareness program organized by the state government at Anambra East Local Government Area Headquarters, Otuacha, to educate youths on the inherent dangers of drug abuse.

The commissioner regretted the increase in the abuse of methamphetamine, noting that it has destroyed many youths, led to vandalisation of public property, ignited degrees of violence, among others, explaining that the workshop was part of Governor Willie Obiano’s efforts in the fight against crime and criminality in the State.

In their various paper presentations, resource persons at the event including the state Co-ordinator of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Mr. Idris Musibau attributed the increasing rate of crime and criminality, rampant insanity among the youths to daily abuse of drug in the society and warned youths not to take drugs without doctor’s prescription.

In his remark, the Local Government Chairman of National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Comrade Peter Nnekwe, while commending the state government for the initiative, advocated that government should engage community leaders in the fight against drug abuse for effective outcome.
