The Imo state House of Assembly on Tuesday during plenary has taken drastic step to cut the menace of illicit drug especially the trending crystal meth generally known as Mkpuru mmiri

This was coming after the member representing Ideato North state constituency, Hon. Arthur Egwim moved a motion to stop the intake of the drug by Imo youths. Egwim lamented that taking of hard drugs poses great danger to the state as its consumption is on the increase.

He stated that the hard drug makes youths to indulge in various forms of illegalities, adding that it is detrimental to the progress and development of the State.

The member representing Njaba state constituency Hon. Onwudiwe seconded the motion, while the Deputy Speaker Hon. Amara Iwuanyanwu (Nwangele), Hon. Ngozi Obiefula(Isu) Hon. Uche Ogbuagu (Ikeduru) Hon. Chigozie Nwaneri (Oru East) supported the motion.

They maintained that the Ministry of Health should carry out a media campaign to stop the menace.
The House through a vote put up by the Speaker, Hon. Kennedy Ibeh urged the Imo state government to reconstitute a state Committee that will work in synergy with National Drug Enforcement Agency to nip the vice in the bud.

It also resolved that the state government should establish a rehabilitation centre and direct the Ministry of Health to create awareness and enlightenment among the youths against the use of hard drugs. The House also resolved to have an interaction with the state Commandant of NDLEA, Commissioner of Health and the commissioner of police to ascertain the level of efforts they have made in stopping the menace in the state.
