Fear of uncertainty has gripped the people of Awgu Community in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State as unknown gunmen stormed the premises of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the area on Sunday and set the building ablaze.

It was learnt that the hoodlums climbed through the perimeter fence to gain access to the office before setting it on fire.

The inferno, which started in the early hours of Sunday did substantial damage to the INEC’s Office, before men of Enugu state fire service arrived the scene.

The Fire Service Station in Ozalla, Nkanu West local Government Area which is close to Agwu was alerted of the incident on phone but before the operatives could get to the scene both the building and vital documents including electoral materials were reportedly gutted by fire.

As at the time of going to press, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

It could be recalled that a video circulating on the social media since Saturday showed some armed hoodlums threatening that there would be no election in Biafraland in 2023 after they had dispersed a political gathering in a yet to be identified community and subjected members of a political party at the event to severe torture.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Ndukwe could not be reached for comment but sources disclosed that policemen in Awgu have been mobilized to search for the arsonists responsible for the inferno.

Meanwhile, many people in the area were living in fear following the Sunday attack.
