The Imo state police command has confirmed the death of a police inspector who died during the attack by gunmen at Mgbidi police station on Friday.
It was gathered that in a bid to repel an attack by the hoodlums, who wanted to penetrate the divisional police in the area, the police engaged them in a gun battle and in the process, the inspector whose name is yet to be revealed lost his life while another sustained a minor bullet injury on the head.
An eye witness account has it, that the gunmen attacked the police men who were stationed close to the police station and were taken unawares by the hoodlums who came in disguise.
The police in a bid to stop their access to the premises of station opened fire on them, in the process, some of them were injured and escaped with the Toyota Hilux van that conveyed them.
It was also gathered that the operation lasted within a short time frame as the hoodlums fled having been suppressed by the Police Tactical team
According to a statement made available by the police, the hoodlums were given a hot chase as they fled even as the police is making efforts to track the hideout of the criminals since it’s evident that they will not go far because of the several injuries they sustained.
The police therefore seized the opportunity to remind imo citizens to always support the police in fighting crimes by fishing out criminal elements in their locality and urged people not to fail in reporting anyone treating bullet wounds around them.
The commissioner of police CP Rabiu Hussaini also assured that the police will continue in its responsibility to ensuring that peace and stability is restored in the state
