A situation of man’s inhumanity to man is raising its head at Osusu Amaukwa community, Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State, as police officers operating there have been accused of perpetrating one of the worst inhuman treatments ever seen.
Making the allegations, the Civil Liberties Organization (CLO), Aba Unit has on Thursday said that officers of the Counter-Terrorism Unit of the Nigerian Police are using wild dogs to aid their extortionist activities.
In a statement made available to Journalists, Chairman, Aba Unit of CLO, Prof. Charles Chinekezi accused officers of the CTU at New Umuahia Road that links Aba to Umuahia of using wild dogs to intimidate and extort money from motorists, motorcyclists, tricycle operators and other road users.
The Human Rights group, therefore, called on the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba to as a matter of urgency call officers of the CTU stationed at Obingwa Local Government Area in Abia State to order.
CLO said that CTU officers at Osusu Amaukwa town in Obingwa LGA precisely at the New Umuahia Road are causing serious panic and life-threatening situations for motorists and other road users.
Chairman, Aba Unit of CLO, Prof Charles Chinekezi, called on the IGP to use his good office to mount a full-scale investigation into the illegal activities of CTU officers.
He said that the inhuman act of using wild dogs to threaten innocent to forcefully give away their hard-earned money by the CTU officers at Obingwa is currently painting the Nigerian Police in a bad light.
Chinekezi urged IGP to ensure that after proper investigation such officers should be prosecuted and punished accordingly to serve as a deterrent to other such officers of any other uniformed services.
He said that what CTU officers are doing in Obingwa is a repeat and continuation of what principally sparked off the infamous #EndSARS riot which rocked every part of Nigeria and left the nation destroyed both economically, socially and psychologically.
“Only on Friday 26 November 2021, an elderly woman in her late sixties was almost bitten to death by these dogs for refusing to pay toll fee accordingly.
“Earlier this year, an Okada rider (motorcyclists) who sped off and subsequently killed one of the dogs narrowly escaped death in the hands of the policemen who chased him almost into Umuahia township before backing off from the deadly chase.
“These privately procured wild dogs have continued to maul and injured innocent citizens who have minimal quarters to complain their ordeals in the hands of anarchists who parade as Federal Policemen using government’s weapon as an instrument of terror,” part of the statement reads.
Chinekezi said that only an urgent action from the IGP will put an end to the horrible inhuman treatment the CTU officers are showing on road users at New Umuahia Road, stressing that it should need to end and urgently.
