Goods worth millions of naira were destroyed in Umuahia by an evening rainstorm. The storm which heralded the evening rain started at about 4pm and lasted for about fifteen minutes.
When the stormed settled, several goods worth millions of naira were destroyed by the natural visitor. Most affected by the storm were some traders at Orie Ugba market whose goods were damaged by the rampaging storm.
At Isi Gate junction, three billboards were destroyed by the storm while some of the traders at Isi Gate market complained that their goods, including food stuff and clothing materials were thrown into the gutters and washed away.
A trader at Orie Ugba market, Mr Kendy Sopuruchi lamented that his boutique which was recently stocked with high quality cloths was destroyed by the rainstorm, saying that most of the expensive wares were blown away by the storm, regretting that the missing materials were never recovered.
He appealed to the State government and able individuals in the State to assist him to restock his shop as according to him, the funds he used in stocking his shop were sourced from a local financial institution as loan.
The Executive Secretary of Abia State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Mr Sunny Jackson was not available in his office to comment on the development. Also, phone calls put across to his phone was not answered as at the time of this report.
