Ven. Tochukwu Sagacious Ikezue, a senatorial aspirant for Anambra Central under the Labour Party, has revealed that his return to active politics is driven by what he describes as a divine mandate to serve and restore purpose to governance.

Speaking during a meeting with his media team in Awka, the cleric traced his journey from politics to priesthood and now back to the political stage, presenting it as a path shaped by experience, faith, and a deep commitment to public service.

Before answering the call to ministry, Ven. Ikezue had built a foundation in Nigerian politics. He served as Personal Assistant to Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, a role he said exposed him to the inner workings of governance and leadership.

Reflecting on that period, he noted that the experience helped shape his understanding of public administration and policy. He also recalled working alongside key figures who have since risen in national leadership, including Benjamin Kalu.

According to him, those early years planted the seeds of a long-standing passion for service, one that has grown over more than three decades.

In 2008, his journey took a dramatic turn. Ven. Ikezue said he received what he believes was a clear call from God to embrace the priesthood. Though he initially resisted, hoping instead to serve through other means, he eventually yielded.

He described that period as a time of spiritual refinement, often referring to it as his “wilderness experience.” During those years, he remained actively involved in development work, including serving as a consultant in the Ministry of Finance.

He highlighted his role in initiatives that created employment opportunities for thousands of Anambra youths during the administration of Dr. Willie Obiano, noting that the efforts earned recognition and commendation.

Now stepping forward as a senatorial aspirant, Ven. Ikezue insists his ambition is not driven by personal interest but by a sense of responsibility.

He described his decision to contest as a “rescue mission,” drawing parallels with biblical leadership and stressing the need for moral direction in governance. According to him, the Senate requires leaders who are guided by integrity, accountability, and reverence for higher values.

He criticised what he called the culture of deception and unfulfilled promises in Nigerian politics, pledging instead to offer transparent and people-centred leadership.

Ven. Ikezue also emphasised the importance of unity beyond political affiliations. He defended his engagement with leaders across party lines, including Gov. Charles Soludo, describing such interactions as necessary for the overall progress of Anambra State.

He stated that his approach has received the backing of Labour Party stakeholders, including Nenadi Usman and Julius Abure, who he said support his focus on the state’s development above partisan interests.

Calling for a new style of leadership, Ikezue urged Nigerians to support leaders who prioritise the welfare of their people and are willing to take firm decisions without fear.

He referenced the stance of David Mark as an example of principled leadership, stressing that elected officials must defend the interests of their constituents at all times.

As the race for the Anambra Central Senatorial seat gathers momentum, Ven. Ikezue’s entry adds a unique dimension, one that blends faith, experience, and a strong message on ethical leadership.

Whether his message will resonate widely with voters remains to be seen, but his declaration marks a significant moment in the evolving political landscape of Anambra State.
