Edwin Achum, a chief, philanthropist and community leader, from Achalla in Awka north local government area of Anambra state, south-east Nigeria, died last week Friday in Lagos, at the age of 80 years.

But, while on this earth plane, the late Achum, born in Achalla, March 15, 1943, was trained at the University of Nigeria Nsukka-Nigeria, where he bagged a degree in sociologist and anthropologist.

He distinguished himself and served our country with an estimated population of 203 million people now, devotedly. Today, he is dead and far gone.

This is indeed Godly, humanitarian and therefore worthy of emulation. In a country ravaged by corruption, Edwin was a rare gem.

He came, saw and contributed his bit to making Nigeria a better country.

His wife, Dr (Mrs) Grace Achum said her late husband retired as a comptroller of the Nigeria Customs Service. This is true and the customs will indeed miss him.

His son, Valentine Tobechukwu Achum, also said that his late father was and is still described by most of his former colleagues at the customs as Nigeria’s finest Customs officer. This is good copy for the departed Achum.

Beyond these preliminary remarks, Edwin was a charitable community leader. He helped in the development of local government structures in his state- Anambra.

He also donated his country home to be used as Awka north local government secretariat. This is a good copy for God and humanity.

What will you and I be remembered for when we leave this earth plane? This is one big question we must all ponder while on a daily hustle, chasing after money and wealth. There is a time be born and a time to die.

Take it or leave it, there is life after the so-called dead and our thought, words and deeds now will determine where we are born into when we come back to this earth. God bless the soul of Edwin Achum.

The departed was also a devout Christian and parishioner at St John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Ladipo, Oshiodi, Lagos, south-west Nigeria. I am pretty sure the church will also miss the physical present of this godly man.

Even the presidency, through Debo Adesina, spokesman to Muhammed Buhari, Nigerian president, confirmed this in a condolence message sent to the wife of the departed humanitarian, Dr (Mrs) Grace Achum, who is the publisher-editor-in-chief of Businessplus Magazine, Lagos, south-west Nigeria.

In addition to donating his country home to be used as a local government secretariat, the deceased contributed greatly to the growth and development of Achalla, his hometown, and was made life patron of the Lagos branch of Achalla Improvement Union”, the statement reads.
