The Anambra State Police Command has described the attack on residential settlers in Agu-Ifite in the early hours of July 21, 2026, as a calculated criminal plot aimed at creating ethnic tension and undermining the peace and security prevailing in the state.

The Command said Ndi Anambra had continued to demonstrate unity, tolerance and peaceful coexistence, adding that residents had refused to be drawn into divisive ethnic narratives.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer SP Ikenga Tochukwu on 22nd July, said, “the collective resolve of the people had frustrated the alleged criminal objective of sowing discord among residents.”

Following the incident, the Police led a joint security team to the scene for an on-the-spot assessment and operational review.

The team also engaged community leaders, representatives of the affected settlers and other key stakeholders to strengthen confidence, obtain firsthand information and coordinate ongoing security measures.

The Command said intelligence gathered from survivors and other credible sources had provided useful leads, adding that security operatives had consequently intensified intelligence-driven and coordinated manhunt operations to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.

It urged members of the public to remain calm and vigilant, and to continue supporting security agencies by providing credible and timely information.

The Command further reaffirmed its commitment to protecting all law-abiding residents of Anambra State, irrespective of ethnic or religious affiliation, and assured the public that no effort would be spared in ensuring that the perpetrators were arrested and prosecuted.
