It was a drama of a sort and finally President Muhammadu Buhari failed to heed the call of the House of Representative members. Before his failure to honour the invitation last Friday there were already ominous signs that he would not be there when his Attorney-General began to plead excuses why he should not take the call. Interestingly there were also constitutional provisions to negate his arguments.
In my mind’s eyes as I write, I can only but see where the over 200 million Nigerians beckoned or summoned Buhari to meet with them over some irregularities in his administration and he boldly dared them, shunning the call. Assuming the abused Nigeria’s entire population pounce on him, spare a second to imagine the outcome. This is where the servant suddenly turned himself god.
What possibly could have given Buhari the courage to dare the Reps? Is it sheer ego and arrogance? Could it be fear of exposing his ignorance or incompetence? It is possible he has weighed the Reps members and considered them inconsequentials who have no moral courage to summon him or at best a bunch of toothless bull dogs?
I am tempted to believe the later opinion. When the news of Buhari’s failure to respond filtered out a friend quipped, “That is the end of it all. Buhari knows them all to be carrying a lot of baggage and at the slightest threat he would unleash the security operatives against them”
I hold the views very strongly that the National Assembly are co-travellers in crime of the president. For more than five years they have slept away on duty abdicated their responsibilities to check the excesses of the executives and focused more on their own selfish interest. They woke very late that is if they have woken up truly.
There is no sane person in this country as at moment who will not be concerned with the drift the country has found it and i guess this is the reason the legislators reacted by summoning the president to explain the issues playing out. It has never been so bad in the history of this nation.
If the law makers are truly serious and mean business they should commence an impeachment process against the president to salvage what is left of this country. There is nothing on ground at the moment to show that there is any good plan to redeem this country. Nigeria is drifting like a rudderless ship. It is the responsibility of all to save the situation.
If the reps are men with balls they should impeach the president right away. He has over stayed his usefulness.
