There are vast conflicting areas as far as multinational companies and the host country is concerned and for the fact that these conflicts differ from company to company and country to country, solving such conflict requires a serious evaluation of the interest of and the benefits of both parties, taking the overall social and economic benefits of a company and product concerned into consideration. There are no universally valid answers (Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development, 2007).
Many MNCs are interested in the Nigeria market and ant to invest in it. Nigeria, however, could not but to accept and welcome them for the fact that it wants to get its economy developed especially when most investors in Nigeria lack the business knowledge and skills in this area. Nigeria is used to agriculture and creative work but the need to develop the industrial and commercial sectors brought MNCs to lime light. Ever since their inception, a lot had been going on in the economy, which has led to the question as to whether these MNCs are blessings or curses to Nigeria populace.
Most MNCs in Nigeria see themselves as entities that have the power to do and undo in the host country. SHELL, for instance, was contracted a project of oil exploration and production in Nigeria but it is pathetic and sadden to see SHELL, with the backings and influences of the British government forming death squads which has been responsible for the killings of innocent Nigerians. Ken Saro Wiwa, alongside with other eight Ogonis, were hanged in November, 1995 (Hungerstrike Newspaper, 1999). Power in Nigeria is now shared between the economic elite, the military high commands and the Mafia who are all being controlled by some developed and powerful states and union to spawn various forms of paramilitary death squads.
That being the case, my research work has revealed many things while taking a critical look at some MNCs oil producing giants in Nigeria. It reveals that there have been blatant examples of incorrect behaviour of MNCs in Nigeria, which among others include inappropriate influence of political decisions, exploitative wages and poor social conditions.
Multinational companies have found Nigeria to be good markets where they can carry on their businesses and they have over the years continue to be successful. They have grown from strength to strength, financially, martially, technologically and asset-wise. Through the importation of finished goods, Nigeria has been turned to be a dumping ground for both substandard and out-dated or government banned products and materials. They continue to have branches spread all around and likewise expand their networks to all nooks and crannies of the nation unrestrictedly.
Inspite of the problems or challenges being faced by these MNCs from both the citizens and government of Nigeria, they continue to gain the acceptance of some few powerful and scrupulous Nigerians, so-called economic elites, who ever believed that they came with blessings and benefits to better the life of the masses. Their interests must be protected by any means available to them to do this.
