The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA ) has taken another giant step in the control of illicit and dangerous drugs as its officers intercepted over 2000 kilograms of illicit drugs in Anambra state.

The illicit drugs which include marijuana, tramadol, diazepam, cocaine and others were being transported to Yobe State in a trailer decorated with gallons of palm oil and other items to deceive law enforcement agents.

Briefing newsmen at Udoka Housing Estate Awka, headquarters of the agency in Anambra State last Wednesday, the state Commander, Mr. Mohammed Misbahu Idris, said the proscribed drugs were intercepted and impounded by officials of the NDLEA following intelligence reports.

According to the state commander,”we are doing everything within our powers to make sure we rid the country and Anambra state in particular of drug trafficking menace. We are working to stop influx of illicit drugs into Anambra state.

“We had a powerful intelligence that a vehicle loaded with some items had concealment of drugs such as cannabis sativa. We pursued the vehicle and intercepted it at Amawbia junction, Awka and brought it to our office. The truck contained palm oil and other household items used to cover the drugs.”

According to him, the drugs were covered with some commodities like red oil , slippers and others and were allegedly coming from Onitsha and heading to Yobe state.

He gave the breakdown of the drugs as follows,1,635 kilogrammes of cannabis sativa, 235 kilogrammes of tramadol,4.6 kilogrammes diazapam , 34 kilogrammes of Exrl 5 and 0.10 grams of cocaine .

NDLEA also stated that the case was still very fresh and that investigation was ongoing to ascertain the source of the contrabands.
