Anambra Central Senatorial aspirant, Ven. Tochukwu Sagacious Ikezue, has urged members of the Labour Party (LP) to embrace reconciliation and unity, warning that lingering internal divisions could undermine the party’s prospects in future elections.
Speaking to journalists in Awka, Ven. Ikezue described recent court rulings affecting the party’s leadership as a timely wake-up call for stakeholders to close ranks and reposition the LP for the challenges ahead. He stressed that unity of purpose remains the party’s greatest strength, especially as it navigates ongoing legal processes.
“There is a need for reconciliation and unity of purpose,” he said, adding that members must recognise that collective success depends on their ability to work together.
Ven. Ikezue noted that despite the current dominance of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Labour Party still holds significant potential to emerge as a formidable opposition force—provided internal cohesion is prioritised over personal ambition.
He specifically appealed to key figures, including Julius Abure, Alex Otti, and Nenadi Usman, to set aside differences, forgive one another, and place the party’s collective interest above individual considerations.
Advocating a “no victor, no vanquished” approach, the cleric emphasised that lasting peace can only be achieved through sincere reconciliation and mutual respect. He urged leaders at both national and state levels to unite regardless of eventual court outcomes.
“This is the time to close ranks. There should be no winners or losers if we truly want to move forward,” he said.
Warning of the dangers of fragmentation, Ven. Ikezue cautioned that a divided party would remain vulnerable, particularly against a well-entrenched ruling party with extensive political reach.
He further underscored the need for robust grassroots mobilisation, noting that strengthening party structures across local government areas would be critical to maintaining competitiveness.
According to him, only a united front can effectively galvanise public support and position the party for electoral success.
“If the Labour Party gets its acts together and works in unity, it will remain a major voice of the people,” he added.
Ven Ikezue also raised concerns about the implications of a dominant APC presence in the National Assembly, warning that it could tilt the balance of Nigeria’s democracy. He called on opposition forces to act decisively and move beyond rhetoric.
In a moral appeal, particularly to party members of the Christian faith, Ikezue reminded them of the biblical call to love and forgiveness, citing 1 John 4:7–8 as a guiding principle for unity and service.
“Let us love one another… for God is love. We must learn to forgive our brothers and sisters and work together as one,” he said.
He concluded with a rallying call for collective commitment, insisting that unity and teamwork remain the surest path to victory.
“Let us move forward together—forward ever, backward never.”
