Justice Development And Peace Commission ( JDPC) Dunukofia Region of the catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha have embarked on sensitisation of waste disposal during which they decried poor state of environment in the state and appealed to Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo to step up in sanitation policy.

Our reporter who monitored the exercise gathered that the Church organisation took to the streets of Nkpor old road, Nkpor junction and neighbouring streets, Onitsha with placards written ” Don’t litter the environment with paper, canny, bottles and sachets, Stop dumping refuse, put your refuse in a waste bag amongst other as well as chanting, Governor Soludo help us, people are dying here!

The Chairman of the organisation, Mr. John Iwuanyanwu disclosed that the exercise was in line with the United Nation Environmental day which he said they did not observed during the period it was held due to activities in their region, pointing out that the essence of it was to create awareness of environmental cleanness for people to understand the Paramount aspects of self cleanness.

He further lamented the indiscriminate littering of wastes materials in the gutters and streets, adding that the sensitisation is necessary and timely now all the streets and roads are stinking due to unevaluated heap of wastes.

Commenting, one of the JDPC promoters in the Dunukofia Region, Hon. Carmillus Attama hinted that people formed habits of dumping refuse in the water drainages which he said circumvent free flow of flooding.

He warned that lack of free flow of rain flooding could pull down buildings and engulf Children, emphasising the need for government to provide adequate places for evacuation of refuse to avoid environmental hazard to both the Children and adults.

Similarly, another promoter of the organisation, Mr. Attan Anyanwu reminded the public to be conscious of living in a heathy environment and pleaded to the State government to save lives of the innocent citizens by evacuating wastes which he said left unattended in all nooks and crannies of the state.

“We are ready to assist government to evacuate these wastes if they need our assistance because these wastes which are not evacuated might cause epidemics. What we are doing is humanitarian works. Let people discourage those who are dumping refuse in the water channels to stop it. It is not good “Mr. Artan posited.
