…calls for support, partnership for humanitarian services
The Red Cross Society in Anambra have called for all-inclusive support and partnership on the side of Humanity.
They made the call on 10th May, 2025, during the celebration of the 2025 World Red Cross Day held at the state command office with the theme “On the Side of Humanity”.
In a welcome address presented by the State Chairman, NRCS, Anambra state, Professor (Mrs) Charity Ifenyinwa Emelie said the Special day is a recognition of the late Sir Jean Henry Dunant, a Swiss Citizen born on the 8th of May 1828 in Geneva, Switzerland as a Swiss merchant.
She noted that the Red Cross Society emerged shortly aftermath of the battle at Solferrino, where he abandoned his intended trip and devoted himself for several days to helping with the treatment and care for the wounded. Adding that the Red Cross Society, founded in 1863, is one of the largest humanitarian networks in the world with millions of volunteers and staff working across nearly every country.
According to Prof Emelie, the Red Cross seeks to prevent and alleviate human trafficking wherever it may be found, which focuses on the cumulative appraisal of the theme “On the Side of Humanity, as encompassing the general activities of the Red Cross.
The Anambra Red Cross Boss however called on the Society’s Patron, Governor, Prof Charles Soludo, his wife Nonye Soludo, Speaker House of Assembly, the Chief Judge, Commissioners, Partners, Chairman of Local Govt Areas, and stakeholders to grant support to Red Cross Society to continue to promote humanitarian values, and principals, support volunteers, staff and partner to address evolving challenges.
Responding to questions, Executive Branch Secretary, Engr Kingsley Okoye disclosed that the Red Cross is saddled with the responsibility of alleviating the situation of the vulnerable person’s which include those affected by disaster, epidemics, armed conflicts and the poorest communities in both general, remote and hard to reach areas in particular.
Meanwhile, Special attractions were the cutting of cake, award presentation to Sector Commander FRSC, RC Nnenna Alexander and NYSC Anambra boss – Mrs Pauline Ojisua for their humanitarian services.
While dignitaries present include students from federal government college, Awka, Decimal Preparatory College, Awka, Divisional Coordinators, Branch executives and management, representatives from the Anambra Directorate of Secret Service, NCDSC, children’s Orphanage home, Onitsha and Nnewi, friends and well-wishers.
