Former Inspector General of Police, Dr Mike Okiro, has been crowned an icon of national unity and builder by a group known as Igbo youth assembly worldwide.

The group said the honour bestowed on the former police boss was meritorious, based on his numerous contributions and achievements in nation building and progress of the country.

Crowning Okiro with the prestigious award, the assembly, through its president general and secretary general, Ifeanyi Nwaudunna (Esquire) and Casmir Nnadozie, in a release made available to News Echo, on Saturday 3rd September, noted that the assembly deemed it necessary to crown Dr Mike Okiro as an icon and image builder, because of his numerous achievements in the course of building one united and progressive Nigeria, throughout his career in the police, being the first Nigeria Inspector General of Police of Igbo extraction.

According to the youth body, “During Dr Mike Okiro’s tenure, the Nigeria Police Force witnessed tremendous transformation in the fight against crime, protection of lives and property, having worked so hard for the unity and peace of Nigeria.

“During his time as Police Chief, Nigeria was known as a safe and secured country. As most of the units and formations of the Nigeria Police Force today were the initiatives and brain work of Okiro, who used his position as IGP and later as chairman of police service commission to work for the unity of Nigeria, serving as a rallying point for Nigerian youths”.
