Mike Pence, U.S. Vice President, will attend President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration on January 20, a senior administration official has said.
Pence presided over the senate certification of the Electoral College votes that handed Biden victory over President Donald Trump. He acted as the senate president.
Trump had wanted Pence to reject the congressional certification of the electoral victory of Biden in the November 3, 2020 election.
The congressional certification came after security was tightened at Capitol Building following a mob of Trump supporters who had earlier invaded the building to prevent the lawmakers from sitting.
Four people died while several were injured including police personnel in the ensuing violence that followed the invasion.
A curfew was declared by the local police chief to prevent a further escalation of the crisis. Several of the perpetrators of the violence were also arrested.
Facebook and Twitter have suspended the accounts of Trump indefinitely for inciting his supporters to invade the Capitol Building.
Trump’s Instagram account was also blocked permanently.
Trump had indicated that he would not attend the inauguration of his successor on January 20 after he had grudgingly said he would allow a smooth transition of power to the president-elect.
Trump is also facing impeachment proceeding for the second time before the expiration of his tenure as there are indications that lawmakers of the Democratic Party are also considering removing him from office before January 20. House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, is also reported to be eager to have the president impeached again.
