The Anambra State Government through the State Ministry of Health has intensified its effort on the Mental Health Campaign as the state joins the rest of the World to commemorate World Mental Day.
So, in observance of the 2024 World Mental Health Day, we are creating awareness campaigns to combat depression and substance abuse of drugs that’s rampant nowadays.
State Commissioner for Health Dr. Afam Obidike announced that initiatives have commenced across all the 179 communities in the state.
Dr. Obidike said that World Mental Health day is aimed at raising global awareness about mental health issues. This year’s theme, “Mental Health at Work,’’ emphasizes the importance of creating a supportive workplace to enhance mental well-being.
He said during a press briefing in his office at the Jerome Udoji Secretariat Complex, Awka.
“The recent mental health survey indicated that nearly 10.6% of adults experience mental health disorders, impacting 1 in 8 people globally.’’
He appealed to relevant bodies to take urgent action so as to mitigate risks to mental health in work environments while advocating for collaboration among government, employers, and health organizations.
“Our objective in Anambra is to raise awareness about mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, and substance abuse, particularly in the context of ongoing economic hardship.
“To bolster these efforts, Governor Chukwuma Soludo has approved the implementation of a new minimum wage and recently employed health workers trained in managing mental health disorders. Additionally a dedicated mental health unit has been established to coordinate care in line with national policy,’’
Dr. Obidike urged the public to adopt strategies for improving mental health, such as fostering open communication, prioritizing sleep and nutrition, exercising regularly, and seeking help when needed.
Dr. Uchenna Okeke, State Mental Health Programme Coordinator, also encouraged communities to join the campaign against mental health disorders in the State.
In attendance during the briefing include, the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Mrs. Obiageli Uchebo, acting Director Public Health, Dr. Afam Anaeme, representatives from partners, World Health Organization, Clinton Health Access Initiative, Achieving Health Nigeria and RED AID Nigeria.
