Following the immoralities being witnessed presently, in some private and public Primary and Secondary Schools in Nigeria, the immediate past Commissioner for Basic Education in Anambra State, under Governor Willie Obiano, Professor Kate Omenugha, has pledged to use Nigeria’s Film Industry to contribute her quota in the fight against the ugly trend in Nigeria Education System. She frowned at the level in which students in boarding schools, especially, at secondary level in some part of the country, has turned the school premises to Cult Temples and brothels for ungodly behaviours.
She stressed that the Nollywood Industry at the moment should minimize acting crime related movies and focus more on films that discourages sex explicitly, cultism, rituals, exam malpractice and other evil practices in the society.
The Commissioner, made her position known during the unveiling of a new movie she acted as the Executive Director, titled; “A Little Scar” at Annabel Cinema hall Awka, on Sunday evening.
According to her, her interest in Nollywood Industry was to enable her embarked on a campaign targeted at curbing the menace of examination malpractice, indecent dressing among girl child, Cult practices among student in Boarding Schools across the country, through movies.
“As a mother and Commissioner for Basic Education for good eight years, I was moved to join other concerned well-do-Nigerians to educate and protect poor/vulnerable students and their parents from the inhuman treatment meted on them in Schools, especially, Boarding Schools, where students at times are subjected to sexual immoralities and cultism practices, she added.
Prof. Omenugha, who is also the Director of Kate Omenugha Centre for Arts and Creativity, explain further that the campaign is aimed at mindset shift and educating students on why it’s unethical and unacceptable to cheat during examination, the consequences of such malpractice and how to prepare adequately for examination so as to avoid the temptation to cheat and the campaign will also be using social media platforms such as WhatsApp Messenger, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to get the message across to the students in Nigeria.
Commending the Commissioner, the Lawmaker, represent Anoacha/Dunukofia/Njikoka Federal Constituency at National Assembly, Honourable Dozie Nwankwo, said the campaign is an initiative that focuses on curbing the menace of examination malpractice among students which has become an order of the day in our secondary schools and across campuses of the nation which contributed immensely to a trendeous declining of the quality of education in the country.
He noted that a Bill to checkmate the activities in Schools is before the House of Representative.
On her part, the former Senior Assistant to Governor Willie Obiano, on Secondary School Monitoring, Hon. Dame Mbekwe, expressed deep appreciation for the initiative.
She said the campaign is timely and became absolutely necessary due to the rising number of offenders during examinations.
On their seperate interview, the State Commissioner for Youth Development, Mr. Patrick Agha-Mba, Hon. Ike Cubanna, Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, on Youth Empowerment Programmes, Dr. Obinna Nelson Omenugha, ASATU President, Barrister Titus Akpordo and APGA aspirant for 2023 election, Hon. Amandi Emeh, says the campaign will bring a drastic reduction of involving in any form of examination malpractice and other criminalities among students in schools.
