The Chairman of Abia State Independent Electoral Commission, ABSIEC, Prof Mkpa Agu Mkpa, have indicated that the Local Government Elections scheduled to hold in the State on May 19th, 2023 may not hold again, due to some challenges.
Prof. Mkpa, in a chat with one of the radio stations in the State, said that, the commission was yet to get vacation orders from Arochukwu and Bende High Courts, which barred them from conducting the elections.
“Incidentally, we have some encumbrances, hitches here and there. Right now, our offices are under locks by the state NLC, and that they came to their office and chase everybody out.
According to him, he said, no hope that the situation would improve by the day, when the election is supposed to be held.
Furthermore, we are expecting that the two court orders that were served them from both Arochukwu and Bende baring them from conducting the local government election would be vacated. Stating that as a law-abiding commission, the commission would not want to be charged for contempt of court. So, we are waiting for the court order to be vacated first.
We are also hoping that, the Labour would resolve their issues and allow our workers to return to work. But because of the court injunction, parties have not come to purchase their forms, and the time is fast approaching. saying that, he is afraid it’s neither here nor there. he stated.
