Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has sacked the management team of Ebonyi State College of Education Ikwo.
The management of the College headed by Prof. Benedict Mbam was earlier suspended by the Governor for allegedly embarking on illegal employment without the knowledge and approval of the state government.
The State Commissioner for information and Orientation, Barr. Uchenna Orji who disclosed this while briefing journalists on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting in Abakaliki stated that the report of the committee set up to investigate the illegal employment in the school indicted the entire management.
He said “Exco received the report of the committee on illegal employment in Ebonyi State College of Education, Ikwo.“Exco considered the report and resolved as follows: That the entire management of Ikwo College of Education is hereby sacked effective today, 9th February, 2022″. “that the management is to hand over to the SSA on Education immediately”.
“That an Exco Committee made up of His Excellency, the Deputy Governor, SSA Religious and Welfare Matters (Very Rev. Fr. Abraham Chukwuma Nwali), and the Commissioner for Education (Dr. Zyl Nwangele) is to recommend to Exco, persons that may be appointed to manage the College for one month (30 days)”. He stated.
Meanwhile, Governor David Umahi has inaugurated new interim management for Ebonyi State University to pilot the affairs of the institution for the next twelve months.
The new management has Professor Chigozie Ogbu as the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Eugene Nweke as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor – Academics, Mr. Jeremiah Nwangbo as Registrar, Mr. Anthony Isu – Bursar, Mrs. Victoria Nwali – Librarian, and Professor Happiness Oselebe – Deputy Vice-Chancellor – Administration.
Addressing the new management at the Executive Council Chambers, Ochoudo Centenary City Abakaliki Umahi urged them to redouble their efforts for the overall development of the University.
“Let me on behalf of the Government congratulate Professor Ogbu and his team, three people in the old management have been dropped and three have been retained, Ebonyi State University came first in the rating of State Universities in the South East, so it is something to commend them and for Ebonyi people to know them, Ebonyi State University came second in the rating of the entire Universities in the South East, only the University of Nigeria Nsukka came ahead of them.
“We are committed to making the University rank among the best five in the Country and we are committed to doing that.” Earlier, the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Chief Cletus Ofoke said the inauguration was following the expiration of the tenure of office of the management of the University which was done in line with the law establishing the institution.
In an acceptance speech, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Chigozie Ogbu thanked the Governor for the opportunity to serve and pledged that they would bring their experience to bear in the overall development of the University.
