Govt college old boys holds mentorship conference

The Old Boys Association of the prestigious Government Secondary School Owerri Imo State has held a one day students mentorship conference, rewarding teachers and students for excellence.

Speaking at the epoch-making event, the National chairman of the association, Mr. Chukwuemeka Adrian Nwokeji while delivering his welcome Address said, the mentorship conference was introduced in 2018 and it became a biennial event.

He maintained that the essence of the programme was to train and raise students to be responsible and pursue their career in life, adding that those who participated in the essay competition titled “Education in the Covid 19 era and the role of ICT” organized by the 2000-2006 class set of the college were awarded with gifts.

“Our aim was to collectively enlighten the young world to keep their feet on the ground and keep reaching for stars no matter what life throws at them” he said.
“We believe mentorship serves as a thought partner for students on their academic journey and helps to empower students to become autonomous learners and agents of their own change”. He said

In addition, Mr. Nwokeji while speaking with newsmen said he was impressed by the performance of the students and promised to do more for their Alma Mater especially the renovation of the school hall.

The secretary, Education Management Board Dr. Mrs. Adaugo Nwanebo expressed delight over the achievements of the Old boys and urged the PTA to emulate such gesture and give maximum support to the growth and development of the school. She further urged the Association to also extend their programs to the Teachers.

She noted that introducing capacity building programmes will enable the teachers to deliver their responsibilities excellently.

The principal of the Senior secondary school, Rev. Jamike Eke thanked the Old boys for their excellent performance and prayed God to sustain their efforts as he noted that most of the projects executed in the school were through the combined efforts of the various sets of the Old boys and urged them not to relent in their efforts.

The winners of the competition who were selected from the Senior secondary classes of SS1 to SS3 respectively were rewarded with cash prizes of over 300,000 naira shared among the winners.
Obinna Stanley the over all winner of the essay competition who won 100, 000 could not hide his excitement as he disclosed that he was pleased with the conduct of the competition and thanked the organisers for their efforts. Others won 60,000 and 80,000 respectively. There were also lots of consolation cash prizes for the 1st Runner ups and those who participated in the debate and other activities.

Highlight of the event was lectures on career, Debates, pop quiz on ICT cultural dance and other activities.
