Umuahia

Abia State university Uturu has denied some reports online which claimed that parents and students of the institution were being milked financially by lecturers and other staff of the school, through sale of books, hand-outs or other payments.

In a statement signed by the PRO/media head, Mr. Chijioke Nwogu and made available to newsmen, the university governing authority faulted the reports, pointing out that sale of hand-outs, unapproved books had long been banned in the school while the N30,000 previously charged for the certificate verification had also been slashed to N10,000 by the school management.

The statement further explained that the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Maxwell Ogbulu had also directed that admission letters and Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) letters were printed free of charge in efforts to reduce burden on parents and students, adding that the VC had “zero tolerance” to exploitation of students.

The school assured, “Therefore, the university urges parents or students with substantive evidence of any exploitation by any staff of the university to report such as prompt and appropriate action would be taken to punish anyone found culpable.”
ABSU maintained that only text books and other publications approved by book review committee of the school were sold in the school’s bookshop and nowhere else.
