There is so much hunger in the land. There is so much anguish everywhere. The challenges of poverty seemingly are overwhelming. The route to wealth are many:- the good, the bad, the ugly. Many impoverished people want wealth at all costs. They care less even if it means stepping on other’s toes to get what they want.
Today, one of the easy means to wealth is through ritual murder. Many have adopted it not minding the consequences. Every day we hear sordid tales of gory incidents here and there resulting from ritual practices to get money.
People are either jumping out from vehicles and running mad or from hotel rooms. Even in sacred places like churches ritual practices for money have been reported. There are also reports of people dumped by the road sides with vital organs severed from their bodies.
Some people in quest for wealth are compelled to do the most unthinkable. It sounds crude and unheard of that someone would be made to feed on faeces or run mad temporarily as a sacrifice to access wealth.
Quite often women have fallen victim more than any group. They fall prey to mischievous men who flaunt their wealth as bait to get them. Little wonder they are the most affected. In our land presently hard work hardly pays. People want to reap when or where they may not work.
The attitude of the society towards wealth and accomplishment has supported to accentuate the mad craving for money. In our churches, the preachers are heard talking about prosperity in a manner that people see poverty as a curse they must pull out from by all means possible. The church also preaches that money answers all things
Community leaders and locals celebrate people with wealth and honour them as accomplished men without minding how they arrive at their wealth. The Universities will honour them with doctorate degrees while their praises are sang everywhere they step in.
Politicians without contributing to national wealth loot the national economy with impunity and in the process impoverish the masses. The politicians use same wealth to buy the conscience of the people and thereby seek to perpetuate them in office.
The act of making money without working hard for it has become our culture, little wonder people now cut corners to achieve whatever they seek. While they swim in opulence, the youths who are unemployed and loafing around are prompted to follow suit. This is the reason they are found in all manner of crimes doing scam, yahoo-yahoo, etc.
News Echo frowns strongly at the level our values have been debased leading us to an all time low in terms of morals. We wish to remind that every action of man has consequences whether or not we realize that. There is every need for us to tread cautiously. We do not need the preaching that come from any religious group to understand that we are running down ourselves and others.
No man lives in isolation. What affects one affects all and emphasizes the need for us to exercise restraint in our actions.
