Some say that Nigeria is sitting on a keg of gun powder waiting to explode while yet others see its present position as irredeemable. The country is currently undergoing serious stress in virtually every area of life which has seriously challenged its survival. With each passing day there is always a tale of woes
Nigeria belongs to the group of countries classed as under developed. Many of the countries it had enjoyed this same status in the sixties have left the zone and rubbing shoulders with the so called developed countries. We are still very much dependent on other nations even for such basic needs as food.
Aside from lacking in technological resources what has been identified to be the country’s greatest challenge is the matter of leadership which it has continued to grapple since it secured flag independence. The truth in the fact can be glimpsed from the reality that no administration has fared better than the one it succeeded.
Nigeria is well endowed with both human and material resources in great abundance. There is no doubt that it remains the envy of most nations because of its natural endowments. What is grossly lacking is the ability of those who manage its affairs to harness these resources to optimize its value. This appears its greatest undoing or shortcoming.
Corrupt practices of the leaders dating back to independence have ganged up to mess up the country. It has solidified into a hydra headed monster that cannot be done away with. Corruption has become our culture, our identity. Virtually every one is living it but mouthing against it.
Through corrupt practices our common wealth is colonized by a few, the masses are impoverished, poverty is shared and through a system of subtle class protection the perpetrators go scot free. It is on record that no corruption fight has ever whittled down corruption no matter how hard we claim to fight it.
Our leaders are people who claim membership of religious group or another but their conduct does not show that they practice the injunctions of their faith. The Christian religion states that the greatest among you shall be the servant of all. Unfortunately this is not the case because the Nigerian leaders are only mindful of themselves.
They are found driving their posh cars, living in the state of the art house, tastefully furnished apartment, globetrotting, etc all at the expense of the poor they are supposed to be leading. Patriotism is a strange word in the country for patriots are few to come by especially in this era.
News Echo wishes to remind our leaders that primitive accumulation of wealth which denies others what they are entitled to is inimical to natural justice, equity and good conscience. It is necessary to remind us that no one takes away anything from planet earth whenever death calls. People are usually remembered for what they have been able to contribute to advance the cause of others than by what they have accumulated against others.
We enjoin all therefore especially political office holders to aspire towards improving the life of others. will one day give account of how he has managed others affairs or resources entrusted in their care. The law of life is adamantine.
