From Nonye Udumiri,
Aba

A police officer Wednesday shot and killed a colleague in Aba, the commercial hub of South East Nigeria, while trying to effect arrest.
The incident occurred at the Bata Junction, Aba-Owerri road and major link to the Aba main motor-park, Ogbor-Hill and the Umungasi axis of the city.
News Echo learnt that the trigger-happy officer, who was trying to shoot a civilian for resisting arrest, ended up shooting his colleague at the process.

Eyewitnesses said a tinted glass Jeep approaching from Aba Sports Club axis was stopped by the police officers who tried to force the occupants into their waiting Hilux Van.

It was gathered that when the occupant of the vehicle resisted the arrest, one of the police officers pulled his gun and mistakenly shot at his colleagues.
“When the police officer shot at his colleague, they suddenly left the man they were forcefully trying to arrest and began attending to their colleague.

“However, the man suddenly ran away heading towards Sweet Fast Food where the soldiers stationed there intervened and the police officers restricted and carried their shot colleague into their Hilux Van and left for hospital probably.

“But from where I was watching, the police officer died instantly except if there is a miracle that will save him because it seems as if the bullet hit him on the chest,” an eyewitness said.

When our reporter contacted the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Abia State, SP Geoffrey Ogbonna, said that he is yet to be informed of the situation and cannot comment on it.
