Nawfia community celebrates new yam festival after 40-years of Igweship tussle

The Traditional Ruler of Nawfia Community in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, Igwe Dr. Ogochukwu Daniel Obelle, has performed the 2022 new yam festival of the community, after fourty years of Igweship tussle. News Echo gathered that the annual traditional celebration, which took place at the community’s Civil Centre on Saturday, attracted Traditional rulers from neighbour communities, Clerics, the Protocol officer to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Mr. Chinedu Nwoye, and other top government officers in the state.

Performing the festival, Igwe Obelle, who thanked God for bountiful harvest and blessings called on his subjects to embrace peace for sustainable development in the community. According to the Monarch, this is the first time after fourty years, Nawfia people would come together again and joined in celebrating the annual traditional event that promote peace, after the assassination of our former Traditional ruler, Igwe F.M.D.C Nwankwo.

“For more than 40-years now, after the assassination of late Igwe Nwankwo, the community has involved in leadership crisis over who becomes the next traditional ruler of the town. But ever since I was certified and recognised by the immediate past administration of Chief Willie Obiano, as the authentic Monarch of Nawfia, peace is gradually restoring in the community. And I assured you that the era of arrogance, oppression, suppression, injustice and bitterness is over.

“Another significant of the celebration is to restore the community’s loss values, so that brothers and brothers, sisters and sisters can engaged each other with geniou conversation for the sake of peace, unity and development, he added.

The Monarch commended the state governor, Chukwuma Soludo, for appointing some of his subjects into his cabinet, including Mr. Chinedu Nwoye, as the governor’s Chief Protocol Officer/Deputy Chief of Staff. The President General of the community, Hon. Daniel Okoye, while appreciating guest at the occasion, noted that peace has returned to the community despite the fact that the Igweship tussle is still ongoing at the Appeal Court Awka, between Igwe Daniel Obelle and his rival, Igwe Chijioke Nwankwo, son of late Igwe F.M.D.C Nwankwo. He noted also that as it stands now, his leadership as the President General and Igwe Obelle, as the Traditional Ruler of Nawfia Community, have Anambra State Government recognition. Other visitors from far and near joined in paying homage to the Monarch, at the event that featured masquerade dance and other cultural activities.
