The collapse of the interior roofing and ceiling of the Imo International Convention Centre (IICC), constructed barely three years ago by the Okorocha administration, last night, has been described as a colossal waste of state resources.
The discovery of the cave- in roofing and ceiling materials was made by security personnel on morning duty who reported the discovery to Government House officials.
Governor Hope Uzodimma on receiving the information dispatched a team to inspect the building which conducted a detailed on-the-spot inspection for documentation.
The Account General of the state, Chief Val Obieze who joined the inspection, expressed disappointment at the unfortunate incident, describing it as a colossal waste of state money and resources by the Okorocha administration.
“My office is here so I came to see what happened at the IICC and I saw this colossal damage. The interior has collapsed.
I discovered that poor materials were used to erect this gigantic structure, adding that it is a colossal loss to Imo. “This money that should have been used for other things that would have benefitted the citizenry has been wasted.”
Obieze expressed concern that such an incident could occur in the treasury house where his office was located since it was built the same period as the convention center, as he reported that this has generated fear within him and his staff.
He harped on the need for the use of good quality materials and engaging reputable companies in construction, pointing out that with the level of solid work the present administration under Gov. Uzodimma was doing, subsequent administration will have no need to spend time and money on reconstruction or rebuilding infrastructure.
