Her Excellency, Mrs. Chioma Uzodimma, has stated her readiness to help end violence against women and girls to achieve a safe society for all persons.
Uzodimma stated this through her chief confidential secretary, Mr. Praise Sonate, in Owerri, last week, while receiving delegates from the National Human Rights Commission who paid her an advocacy visit.
She identified the need to educate women and girls on the value they add to society as she encouraged them to resist any form of gender based violence, reiterating her dedication to the protection of the rights of women and girls and expressed hope that the objective of the 16 days activism will be achieved.
The wife of the governor commended the Human Rights Commission for recognizing the need for activism against gender based violence even as she welcomed the group warmly to her office.
Earlier, in her speech, the Imo State coordinator of the National Human Rights Commission, Mrs. Ukachi Ukah, stated that the visit was part of the activities to mark the International Human Rights Day celebration, noting that the commission embarks on 16-day activism against gender based violence yearly as part of the celebration.
Ukah appealed to the state government to partner with the commission to enable it achieve more especially in the fight against gender based violence, saying majority of the cases the commission handles are related to domestic violence, stressing the need to intensify efforts against it, calling on government to create public enlightenment platforms to enable the commission educate more women and girls on their rights and steps to take to protect their rights.
The theme of this year’s International Human Rights Day celebration was “Orange the World: End Violence Against Women Now”.
